AnaMendieta’s work truly shines in the exhibition rooms, highlighting her versatile and visionary artistic vision. Although her life ended tragically, she overcame her early circumstances as a Cuban immigrant who arrived in the U.S. at the age of 12 with her older sister, Raquel, as part of Operation Peter Pan (the clandestine exodus of over Inthe mid-to late 1970s Mendieta made a series of works called Arbol de la Vida, or Tree of Life. For this particular work Mendieta plastered herself in mud before standing, with Weare talking about the impressive Árboles de la Vida, translated as Tree of Life. Árboles de la Vida are one of the most famous sculptures of Mexican culture that traditionally represent the biblical scene of creation.
